DIY Sunscreen Recipe

It’s that time of year where we all start to enjoy the warm weather outside, but did you know that an overwhelming amount of sunscreens on the market today have cancer causing ingredients? Studies have shown there is a higher risk of malignant melanoma among individuals who used the most sunscreen. This recipe is not a “chemical” sunscreen. It calls for a specific type of zinc oxide that you MUST use! Please do not purchase an inferior zinc oxide, it must be non-nano and NOT coated.Conventional Sunscreen Ingredients May:

  • Absorb into the blood
  • Release free radicals in sunlight
  • Act like estrogen
  • Disrupt hormones
  • Cause allergic reactions
  • Cause skin irritation
  • Have no rigorous safety standards

Here are some unsafe, toxic chemicals in sunscreen:

  • Para amino benzoic acid
  • Octyl salicyclate
  • Oxybenzone
  • Cinoxate
  • Dioxybenzone
  • Phenylbenzimidazole
  • Homosalate
  • Menthyl anthranilate
  • Ococrylene
  • Methoxycinnamate
  • Parabens

Today we are taught that sun is the enemy! But it’s not necessarily the sun that is causing the cancer! The sun is the best source of Vitamin D3. When you get approximately 20 minutes of direct sunlight, your body naturally generates Vitamin D3. Vitamin D3 has been one of the most researched nutrients over the past 5 years and it has been shown to naturally help boost the immune system, help fight cancer and improve mood.So now onto why you’re all here…the DIY sunscreen that will save your skin!Ingredients/Supplies (will make 6 ounces)

  • Double-boiler – I make my own with a heat safe bowl over a pot of shallow boiling water
  • Kitchen Scale
  • Mask– You shouldn’t breathe in the zinc oxide and be sure little ones and pets aren’t around as you pour.
  • Container(s) to hold the finished product – Here’s what I use or you can opt for a tin like this
  • 90g Coconut Oil– Organic, unrefined, virgin coconut oil like this one
  • 5g Beeswax– I love these beeswax pastilles(they are MUCH easier to work with than a block of wax)
  • 5g Shea Butter – Organic, unrefined shea butter like this one
  • 40g Zinc Oxide – I suggest this non-nano, uncoated zinc oxide
  • 1/2 tVitamin E – make sure you know from where it is sourced (& non-GMO), especially if you have allergies.

Directions:

  • Place your glass bowl on your scale, hit tare.
  • Add all ingredients (one-by-one, hitting tare in between) EXCEPT the zinc oxide, which you add at the end.
  • Place glass bowl over pot of shallow, slightly simmering water. Melt ingredients completely (stir with a whisk to help it along).
  • Carefully remove from stove and wipe down condensation on bowl (you do not want water getting into your product).
  • Place bowl on scale, hit tare.
  • Add zinc oxide, slowly, until you get to 40g. Again, add this slooooowly, as the zinc settles the amount will increase on your scale.
  • Whisk and then carefully pour into container(s) of your choice.
  • This will take a few minutes to set up. Just walk away and leave it alone to quietly set up.

Because this sunscreen is made without harsh, toxic and absorbing ingredients you will need to lather ever hour or so, especially when in the water or sweating. This sunscreen is approximately SPF 20 and is a broad spectrum sunscreen and will provide protection from both UVA and UVB sun rays. Coconut oil has a natural SPF factor so it very well could be higher than SPF 20. So lather up, go outside, and soak in the Vitamin D3!
