DIY Placemat Pillow
There are a lot of pretty awesome DIYs out there and this one has to be one of my favorites! There are a few of my IG buds that inspired me to try a DIY pillow and I’m so glad that I did! You’ll be thanking me and those that inspired this project after you try it out!Kate from @salvagedior has been known to create pillow covers out of numerous things like rugs, placemats and even thrifted skirts! I mean check out these pops of color on her back cushions created by using thrifted tube skirts.
With this inspiration stuck on my brains I came across a couple fabulous placemats from Project 62 and thought, “oh yes, this is my opportunity to DIY me a pretty pillow or two”. So here are the two placemats that I chose. When choosing a placemat make sure it is a double layered placemat, meaning two pieces of fabric for front and back.
My new pillows bring a bit of nature with the bud stalk + olive backing and a speckle of gold with the petal chevron pattern and neutral backing. Since these pillows are both neutral AND part of my Christmas color pallet I’ll be able to incorporate them into any space at any season.
So how did I make these pillows? Well here’s what you’ll need:
- Placemat that has a backing (mine measures 14” x 20”)
- Seam Ripper
tool OR Embroidery Scissors
- Needle and matching thread OR sewing machine
- Down pillow insert (mine was 14” x 20” and can be found on Amazon here
)
The first step is to rip or cut the stitching on one side of he placemat. Make it just large enough to fit the pillow insert into the placemat. The smaller the opening, the less sewing you need to do later.
Next you start stuffing! Make sure you get the corners of the insert tucked right into the corners of the placemat in order to fill the entire space. Once the insert is all in you can make any adjustments so there are no gaps.
Once the placemat has been stuffed to satisfaction you can now thread your needle and simply sew along the same line of thread that you had removed. You’ll be able to still see where this stitching was so It will be easy to follow. Or if you have a sewing machine you can just zip zap that opening closed.
TA-DA!!! Wouldn’t these pillows look cute on a couch, chair, or in the bedroom? When the seasons change you can flip the pillows around to reveal a solid color or the print. Whichever you please. And another bonus, once you tire of these you can easily find a new placemat and turn that into a pillow for a whole new look! Check out these placemats that would look equally amazing!
